   Rolling Hills Estates Ice Chalet: Learn To Skate

LEARN TO SKATE

 
We offer an inexpensive, recreational group lesson for students as young as 3 years old to adults. The Learn to Skate program is designed to develop skills that the student needs to move on to our advanced figure skating programs or hockey programs. (Learn to Skate is also taught by hockey instructors. Click here for more information) Our philosophy is to provide the students with the skills appropriate for their age level while having fun.
 
 
 
2010-11 SCHEDULE
  • Winter Session: January 4 - February 27
  • Spring Session: March 8 - May 1
  • Spring II Session: May 3 - June 26
  • Summer Session: June 28 - August 21
  • Fall Session: August 30 - October 23
  • Fall II Session: October 25 - December 18
  • 2011 Winter Session: January 3 - February 26 
8 week program - $112.00 fee
Trial Class Available - $15.00 fee (recommend to younger inexperienced skaters who are unsure of skating)

Program Includes:  30 min. group lesson with experienced instructor  (skate rental included) - 8 FREE Public Passes designed to encourage student to practice during the public skating sessions (skate rental included for student) NOTE: Passes may be used for a friend or family  member as well but skate rental not included ($3 rental fee) - 2 Make-Up Classes per session - Student must wear their badge (receive on first day of classes) each time they come to class for check-in - family and re-enrollment discounts

  • It is recommended skaters ages 7 yrs and younger wear helmets
  • Dress in layers and wear gloves
  • Arrive 30 minutes prior to group lesson to ensure proper equipment fitting
  • Testing will take place on week 7 and graduation on week 8
  • NO student/parent is allowed on ice with shoes
  • Schedules are subject to change - Palos Verdes Ice Chalet reserves the right to cancel any group lesson due to low enrollment

Levels are determined by the Ice Skating Institute - ISI is an international governing body for recreational skating and has developed a program of tests and competitions in all areas of figure skating as well as limited areas of speed skating and ice hockey.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

Tots (ages 3-5) - Great Introduction to the wonderful world of ice skating. Build confidence while having fun gaining skills.

Introductory (ages 6-12) - Learn basic skating techniques while having fun gliding, wiggling and swizzling across the ice.

Parent & Little Skater (PALS) (ages 3-5) - Enjoy being together and receive a great introduction into the wonderful world of ice skating.

Pre-Alpha - Be prepared for more fun learning how to glide on one foot, begin backwards skating with more wiggles and swizzles.

Alpha - Get ready to explore a basic for every skater...crossovers! This class will also teach forward stroking and and snowplow stops in addition to other challenging maneuvers.

Beta - Get ready for backwards crossovers! T-stops and backward stroking are also elements of this class that will be taught in pursuit of mastering skating techniques.

Gamma & Delta - Skaters get ready for bunny hops, lunges and shoot the ducks! Also learn about edges - the difference between inside and outside edge of the skating blade.

Freestyle 1 & 2 - Become proficient in waltz jumps, ballet jumps, half-flips, half-lutzes and continue to work on spirals and scratch spins.

Freestyle 3 & 4 - Master the art of salchows, toe loops and change foot spins in this exciting advanced class.

Freestyle 5 & 6 - Learn and perfect your split jump, split falling leaf, axel, double salchow, layback etc. This class advances motivated skaters all the way up the ISI ladder!

Ballet for Skaters - Fun way to expose your child to stretching and conditioning with ballet classes at Ice Chalet. Hungarian ballet instructor, Bridgette Voros, has the experience and technique to make this class a great, fun learning tool for your child.
